How to Prepare Your Home's Electrical System for Hurricane Season

In the summer of 2004, Hurricane Frances made landfall at Hutchinson Island on September 5, striking the heart of the Treasure Coast. Three weeks later, Hurricane Jeanne hit nearly the same stretch of coastline. Some St. Lucie County homeowners waited up to two weeks for FPL to restore power after Jeanne. Twenty years later, Milton arrived in October 2024 and knocked out power to 12,570 FPL customers in St. Lucie County alone, with the utility projecting roughly five days to reach 95% restoration. That’s the baseline this area lives with: not the occasional outage, but the real possibility of days or weeks without grid power when the season runs hot.

Most homeowners know they should have a generator. Fewer realize the generator is only as useful as the electrical system behind it. A weak panel, missing surge protection, or an improperly wired transfer switch can turn backup power into a hazard rather than a solution. Getting the full picture before storm season peaks is the work that actually protects your home. Start with Your Electrical Panel Before the Season Gets Going

Your electrical panel is the foundation everything else depends on. A panel that’s 20 or more years old, or one that’s already running near capacity, handles the load fluctuations that come with storm conditions poorly. Breakers cycle on and off, generators kick in, and the system gets stressed in ways a normal day never triggers. Two panel brands deserve special attention: Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco. Both have documented design flaws, and many Florida insurers now refuse to write policies on homes that still have them installed. If you’re not sure what brand you have, that’s worth finding out before a storm is in the forecast.

A few signs that your panel needs a pre-season inspection: rust or corrosion on the breakers or bus bars, breakers that feel sticky or don’t switch cleanly, and panels located in garages or on exterior walls where heavy rain can push moisture in. St. Lucie County operates under Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023), and panel work requires permits. Permits take time to pull and schedule. Acting in July, before the season reaches its peak, is the practical window.

Whole-Home Surge Protection: The Step Most Homeowners Skip

Power surges during hurricane season come from two directions, and most people only think about one of them. Lightning strikes are the obvious threat. The second is less obvious but just as damaging: the voltage spike that hits when FPL restores grid power after an outage. That restoration moment is when unprotected HVAC systems, refrigerators, and appliances are most vulnerable. The grid comes back online, voltage fluctuates as the system stabilizes, and equipment that survived the storm itself can fail right at the finish line.

A whole-home surge protection device (SPD) installed at the main panel protects every circuit in the house. Plug-in power strips only protect the devices connected to them and do nothing for the air conditioner, the refrigerator, or the wiring itself. If you already have a whole-house SPD installed, check its indicator light before storm season starts. When a device has absorbed a significant surge, the indicator changes state to signal it’s been compromised. A compromised SPD looks installed but isn’t protecting anything. It needs to be replaced before it can absorb the next event.

Generator Readiness in the Treasure Coast Heat

Florida’s heat is harder on generators than most people expect. Starter batteries degrade quickly in this climate, often within two to three years. A generator that starts reliably during a weekly exercise cycle may still fail under full load during an extended outage if the battery is marginal, or if the oil, air filter, and fuel haven’t been serviced going into the season. Generator load bank testing, which puts the unit under a controlled load to verify actual output capacity, is the most reliable way to confirm a generator can perform when it matters.

Transfer switches are required by law for all permanently installed generators. Under NEC 702.5 and the Florida Building Code, the transfer switch must be rated for the connected load and must isolate your home from the utility grid before the generator can power your circuits. Without a proper transfer switch, a generator connected directly to home wiring pushes electricity back onto utility lines, lines that FPL workers restoring power after a storm treat as de-energized. Backfeed kills people. An automatic transfer switch eliminates that risk and is the only legal path for a standby installation.

Outdoor Electrical & EV Charger Prep

Outdoor GFCI outlets (ground-fault circuit interrupters, which cut power the moment they detect a fault to ground) should be tested before storm season with a GFCI tester. Press the test button, confirm the outlet loses power, press reset, confirm it returns. It takes about 30 seconds. Covers on outdoor outlets must be weather-rated and fully intact. Wind-driven rain during a Treasure Coast storm can force water into a damaged or missing cover and create a serious shock hazard. Loose conduit at the service entrance and any unsecured outdoor wiring are worth addressing now too, because in high winds, loose conduit becomes a physical hazard as well as an electrical one.

EV charger owners have a few specific steps to take before a storm arrives. Charge the vehicle to full capacity ahead of the storm so you have maximum range if fuel stations lose power or run dry. Inspect the outdoor charger unit for mounting integrity and confirm the conduit and connections are sealed against water intrusion. If you have a bidirectional charger capable of vehicle-to-home (V2H) power delivery and a compatible EV, that system can serve as supplemental backup power during an outage, but only through properly installed, permitted equipment. A standard Level 2 charger can’t do this on its own, and improvising a connection creates the same backfeed risk as an improperly wired generator.

What to Do During & After the Storm

If flooding threatens your electrical panel, turn off the main breaker before water reaches it. Don’t restore power after the storm until a licensed electrician has inspected any components that were submerged. Water-damaged wiring can appear dry and still fail hours later.

Treat every downed FPL line as live and energized, whether it’s sparking or not. Call 911, then FPL at 1-800-468-8243, and keep everyone clear of the area. Post-storm electrical fires don’t get enough attention as a real risk. Damaged insulation or compromised connections that survived the storm can fail under load hours after FPL restores power. A burning smell you can’t explain, lights flickering when they didn’t before, or breakers that trip immediately after restoration are all signals to turn off the main breaker and call an electrician before turning anything back on.
